Black Horse Site in Nevada!

On our Spet 22 thru 28 outing we had the change to stop by Black Horse. All that is left is a few dugouts which looked like they were cellars, our something of that nature. Black Horse is 34 miles southeast of Ely. As in many other gold discoveries, this was just another lucky find. In 1905 while taking refuge to get out of a bad storm a prospector hid under a rock ledge to wait the storms passing. While waiting he got to tapping on a few rock and found what looked to be of interest.

The assay showed high gold content, and a rush developed bring most of the miners from Osceola to the camp. Within six months the camp grew to over 400, mostly tents and wooden shacks.Photo from Paher (Theron Fox Collection)

A crude mill was built in 1909 and replaced a year later with slightly larger one. By 1911 the vien was gone and by 1913 the camp was history.

The Black Horse Cemetery stands about a mile east of the town up on the ridge. Above is the main gate and to the right is one of the oldest grave sights. The cemetery has been used up to 1998.

Here is the marker inside that grave site.
