Smith Arkansas August 16, 1876, the son
of Thos. Y. And Martha M. Wingfield. Soon after in 1881 the family moved to
California and a year later on to Lakeview, Oregon. The environment George grew up in settled the question of what was to be his
first occupation. He grew up a cowboy and worked on some of the great ranches

Ely Nevada
History article on Ely Nevada and White Pine County.
Before 1868, the northeastern section of the state was
totally comprised in Lander County. Although the railroad did follow the
general course of the California trail, it passed north of many principal
settlements or camp at that time. The three most prominent camps were Austin
with about 3000 residents and in its prime, Treasure City at the summit of
Treasure Hill in White Pine District and a new camp called Hamilton some two
miles north and west of Treasure Hill. Hamilton first called Cave City was the
most recent boom in the district. Other new villages; Silver Springs two miles
southeast of Treasure City; and Egan Village in Egan Canyon district. click-thru

six thousand backed up on CD's I have not used.
Book Reviews
This months book is Desert Challenge, by Richard G. Lillard.
If you are looking to learn a lot about Nevada and Las Vegas in the early days, this is the book. Published by Alfred A Knopf in 1942.
The book gives great details of Nevadas past. It reads like a novel, running through the Nevada history of years gone by. It has some 390
pages and will take a while, but it is well worth the time to read.
I now have my nose stuck in a book by J. Ross Browne intilted '' Adventures of the Apache Country ''. I love the old
style of writing by Browne, he writes with great detail about his explorations in the past.
Published by Promontory Press in 1974, it is a reprint of his 1871 story of his exploration into Apache Country!
Local News in Vegas!
The big news is we have had over 6 inches of rain since the first of the year. Now Lake Mead is up
12 feet. This rain fall is equal to the total of the last threes years. God, I wish it would caught up at a slower rate. This rain is causing me
great problems getting out due to snow at higher elevations.
Over the last seven years, Lake Mead has dropped 75 feet! I hope we do not get it all back in one year, I do not swim well! Last week
I had three feet going down Ann Road at the outlet to our housing developement. Lucky I have a good 4WD.

Trip Logs
Fed 13th, 2005 Well call it cabin fever, or rain fever, or just a good old fashion spring fever. All this weather is just a pain. Brenda heard on the Las Vegas News, that the snow was gone on all of the mountains ranges around Pioche. So I got up early and watched the sunrise, very bright with a few clouds. That was enough for me, we're off. The game plan for today was to get the Panaca Summit Charcoal Kilns first. Then I had the historical site of Lien real close to there. After that it would be the Charcoal Kilns up close to Atlanta, off of MT Wilson road, I also wanted Atlanta and Silver Park as well. Then on the way home stop by Bristol Wells.
Everything looked great till we got up to Alamo and the clouds were down below the mountains. Panaca Summit at 6734 feet, the snow was three feet on the level. Several people had pulled off the road and backed out. But we made a try for it anyway. I got about a mile or so and the snow was getting deeper. We had a hell of a time getting back up hill to the highway. By the time we got to Pioche, I was driving in fog so bad I could not see past my hood. I was able, with my GPS to located the turn off to Atlanta Siding, we did find it. The whole valley was socked in bad. We drove on up to the MT Wilson road, and started plowing mud over the tires, and after several hours of exploring finally found the Kiln. By now I was worn out from the driving and low on gas. Yep, I threw in the towel and called it a day, I had all of the fun I could stand in one day.
We both really had fun, even though it did not work out like I wanted it too. And we will have to return and get Panaca Summit after the snow melts.
| Personal Notes |
The weather is beginning to be a pain. I can only hope
that it will back off come spring. As I have many plans for this summer and I really do not want to change any of them.
Brenda had her second go at the back operation where they kill the nerves to stop the pain. This has went rather well, now all we are left with is
getting the tail bone spur removed. She has conquered the Neck disk, shoulder joint and back disks problems, the colon we treat with medicine and
has seemed to work well. I know this sounds like a broken record but getting her overhauled and back in prospecting shape is a big problem
around here. You have to consider when she is down in bed things get a little hectic. Wesley is a good cook, but he is no match for his mother.
I have backed off from writing a book and have taken after the magazine articles instead. We have confirmed the five articles for the Nevada Central glorious Past Journal for this summers print. Hopefully the March/April issue of the Sierra Heritage will have my Wildrose Kiln picture, they have not confirmed this as yet. I will probably just have to wait and see which
photo they use. The Ely Murals article may get published before I get the chance to get my own photos. We have permission to use the Ely Renaissance Society photos and history in the article, I just wanted my own photos instead but there may not be time to get there before it is published. We are trying to get it in the Sunset Magazine. Now the Nevada Magazine has showed a great interest in Dr Tom Strata and I covering the Pine Nut Festival in September. Their only concern is that we must have approval from the Tribe first and agreement that they will assist us in getting interviews and photos. We have received the tribes conformation on the approval and willingness to help us, but the editor is out of town for a week and we have not got the OK yet for the article. The Bodie and Benton railroad article needs photos this summer for which I will have to spend two to three days around Bodie for sure. It will probably be a Sierra Heritage Article early next year, that is not confirmed yet. Ely and Bodie will be a must for this years program as well as the Pine Nut Festival if approved.
The trip up to the Hot Creek Range for two to three days is a must as well, I need to finish up the article for the Central Nevada Glorious Past journal. I may move this up to the last week in April if the weather will cooperate.
2005 Plans and Goals
Brenda and I both still plan on making the 2005 Rally this year.
It all depends on when and where they have it, and if I can get vacation time to be there.I think they are going to south eastern Nevada at least I hope so because it will make this a lot easier for us.
The Forum Shops Ghosttown outing may or may not happen this year, the gang will not be able to handle weather very well. And we have many other things going on at work that could delay us on getting out.
In March we had planned for an over night in southern Nevada and over in California. I only hope we have the time and good weather to see this happen. It is still on if weather permits and I have the time. If not I will try to get a trip in later into the summer if all others agree.
If all go's well for this summer and it turns off hot, we could be very busy this year. I am looking at landmark mileage and a lot of history to write. Regardless of weather I will make at least one trip a month if not many. There is starting to be so few hours in a day and not enough days to keep up. Professor Strata and I are hoping for a very promising year in the way of writing and I hope to get a lot of new photos as well as updates. Without the sunshine and cloudless sky year round as we have had the past seven years, its hard to make plans.
