C opper was discovered in the Robinson District in the early 1870's, but due to the low grade, low demand and the problems with the exploitations compared to silver and gold, discouraged any development. It wasn't until 1900 when Edwin Gray and Dave Bartley came to the Robinson District and optioned two copper claims , that led the way to the copper boom. To fined out what the limits were, they first run a tunnel into the mountain and soon found themselves in caved on all sides by copper ore. With this news, they had no problem drawing the attention of many engineers and prospective buyers.

Book Reviews

T his months books are "Southern Gentlemen of Nevada Politics " by Eric N. Moody.
The book is about the Pittman boy's ! Even though Key Pittman was the leading brother Nevada Politics, you can not over look Vail's long running career. If you like Nevada Politics for history reading this is a good book. It covers a lot of early Nevada history.

A lso "Tales of Nevada" a really good story book about some of Nevada happenings. Written by Norm Nielson in a way that makes great reading. Did you know what the worlds longest telegram was? The Nevada Constitution, word by word to Chicago at the cost of $4,000 dollars, sent by Frank Bell. He has tons of short stories that will keep you reading for ever. I really enjoyed this one, and I learned a little more about some of them.

Local News in Vegas!

Thank God the ICSC convention is over, this is a real headache for us at the Mall. Everyone goes nuts during May here. But at last it is done, my bosses are now in London for a week. As soon as they get back I can put in for my June vacation and finish up Kiln Canyon and Tecopa Kilns articles.

The weather has finally over night turn to HOT! This last week as been 100 plus and is now returning to normal. The snow should all but be gone at the higher levels, I hope.

Trip Logs

Trip logs are none. We just have not been able to get out this month. Time is running out for the articles we are working on, so I will have to get back to Kiln Canyon in the first part of June and also the Tecopa Kilns. This will finish up our six articles for the Nevada Central Glorious Past Journal.

Personal Notes

Brenda is still waiting on the Doctors. We had the last MRI last weekend. The next step is to replace the disk in her back and take out the tail bone. Mean while my Daughter-in-law took a face dive on the cement. Broke her jaw in four places and busted her teeth in three. Denise has taken over the cooking, housekeeping and washing in the house while Brenda is down. Wesley has been running her back and forth to the hospital almost daily. This leaves me to take care of the house and cooking, the grand kids are NOT very happy. The kids say the best meal I have come up with this week was order-out Pizza from Pizza Hut.

Upcoming Plans

Plan A, is to get up to Kiln Canyon in the first part of June. Also make a one day trip up to Wheeler Pass for the Tecopa Kilns. Dr. Straka is taking care of the Eureka photos this week, as he is in Nevada. This will all but finish our Journal Articles. Tom is going to Diamond City and the Phillipsburg Kilns just Northeast of Eureka for Photos and measurements we need. He is also going to get the Ward Kiln measurements in Ely on the way.

Plan B, is to make a two day trip back to Bodie. I need to get photos of the old Bodie- Benton railroad, or what is left of it. From what I hear the old Trestle is still standing and it would be a great shot for the article. This will be in the last of June or July.

Plan C, is our annual three or four days in Ely. This looks like it might work out after the 4th of July or the second or third week. Brenda and I are looking forward to visiting our friends there. This will give me a chance to get up to Diamond City and Phillipsburg for photos for the web site. I am willing to bet that Al and Donna Frederick are wanting to get out and play some, we still have a lot places around Ely to visit yet.

Plan D, sometime between July and September getting back over to Wildrose Canyon and Owens Lake. I want to get up to Lookout for photos to add to my web site, also the Cottonwood Kilns. There is a couple of Ghost towns on the way up to Wildrose we could get while we are in the area.

Plan E, pending approval from Nevada Magazine. In September Tom and I are going to cover the Pine Nut Festival. This we are really looking forward to. The Festival and rodeo lasts about three days.

Well I am about planned out. I hope everything go's somewhat like I have planned. I am still trying to find someone who lived in the Hot Creek range area when project Faultless happened. I need a couple of interviews for an article I have on the back burner.

I am sure there will be a few more come up, I still have to find the Bennett Pass Charcoal Kiln ruins. As soon as the Journal gets published I will add a Nevada Charcoal kiln map to my site. I am working on it now. This way I can add all of the kilns I find to one map. When we get in Ely I will have to go and get the Hamilton Kilns up behind Big Smoky Mill.

I have really enjoyed writing with Dr. Tom Straka and I have learned a great deal in doing so. We plan on still doing articles together, as often as possible. I am planning for doing a few history articles about the ghost towns of Nevada on my own soon. But as everything go's, one step at a time.
