I n the spring of 1875, the Brown Brothers, William D. and Robert D. came to the Amargosa country east of Death Valley. They were looking for some good ore, and ore is what they found. In the hill just south of Resting Springs on the Spanish Trail was an immense body of ore, which they named Balance. The silver was running $60 a ton and carried with it a great percentage of lead. The brothers no sooner named their location, and then sold an interest to George Hearst. Hearst had missed buying in at their Darwin discovery. Together they organized the Balance Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company.

Book Reviews
T
his month book is The Big Bonanza by Dan De Quille (William Wright)
I have used this book for research many, many times, and have covered it all. To get the real effect
of a book you need to read it cover to cover. That way when you make a statement, it will not be out of context. I
am only a little more than half way through it, and it is well worth the reading.
Local News in Vegas!
Every on is on vacation this but me. The town is filling up with tourist for the holiday and things are jumping around here. The rest of the state seems to be on fire. The local news has fires everywhere. Goodsprings had a bad one but they now have it under control. Caliente may never be the same, unless they get the big out up there. The fire fighters are still working on that one.
The weather has turned to normal, hot at night and hotter
during the day. It is running 80 at night and 100+ through out the day. Boy, if I could only get some time off.

Trip Logs
June 13, 2005 Well I need to get out and I also need photos of the Tecopa Charcoal Kilns updated. So, Wesley and I
took a drive up to Wheeler Pass. It was a shame what we saw. The last time I was up there a few years ago, the main kiln was still
standing and the other two were in bad shape. Now they are all down. Nothing but ruins left. I got my updated photos and then
headed down to Clark Canyon for update photos of the Yount's Sawmill ( Clark Sawmill). Everything was pretty much the same as last
time, but the gate was locked.
Now I wanted to add something new to my list. So we headed for Crystal Nevada. It is a fairly historical town even some people
still live there. I am not sure I want to post what the historical facts are, I am listed on several educational websites for children to use as
a reference. It was real interesting and I got a few photos as well, had a hard time keeping Wesley in the truck. He thought we should
go inside a few places and take photos. The museum could have been interesting, I often wondered what they would have there.
Well all and all we had a great trip and equally good weather.

Trip Logs
June 26, 2005 With our Journal deadline getting close, I had to drop down to Plan D on our June Newsletter.
I need update photos of the Cottonwood Kilns at Owens Lake in California. The weather turned out great, HOT. Wesley and
I got several good photos of the kilns. While we were in the area, I tried to find the old Cottonwood Sawmill. It seems there is
nothing left of that one. We also looked for the railroad siding as well , the information I got from the locals say it is gone too.
There are signs of the old railroad bed all along the lake bed, but nothing for a good photo.
The next stop was back at the Wildrose Kilns on the way home. I manage to get better photos than our last trip when the snow was
up to my knees. We found the Lime Kiln, located behind the fourth kiln from the south. It was covered in snow last time, all that is left
was the foundation.
Now we can do a little ghosttowning. The Harrisburg site I found had a lot of stuff still there. The Cashier Mill was awesome, as well
as the townsite they call Aguereberry Camp. After Harrisburg we went on down to Skidoo. There is nothing left of the townsite, but there
was some good old photos displayed on the sign. We did not find the cemetery, but that will have to be another trip. I did find a good place to
get Death Valley photos, Aguereberry Point. The view from there is totally breath taking. I will have to do a page on it to show some Death Valley
photos.
The trip was long and took us all day. We had a great time and found many reasons for another Death Valley saga.

Brenda is still waiting on the Doctors. She has gone through the last set of shots, and we are now waiting ( as always) on the Doctors. The next step will be surgery on disks and tail bone. This I hope will end our problems. We got a new motorized wheel chair for her, it gets sixty five miles to one charge. At that time I guess, I would have to run her down and bring her home. Problem with that is, she can not set very long in it before her tail bone starts hurting. Then there is the doorways in the house, they are taking a beating. Sparky has learned real quick to NOT stay behind her.
Upcoming Plans, UPDATED
Well, this last month I have jumped plans. We had the chance
to knock out Plan D. We make the Wildrose and Owens lake trip due to Photo demands, so now we have another article completed.
Plan A, is to get back to Kiln Canyon. This will be our trip
July 10th, 11th, and 12th. After we get our photos of the Kilns we can finish the Central Nevada Glorious Past Journal Articles we been working on since
Christmas.
Plan B, August maybe, is to make a two day trip back to Bodie. I need to get photos of the old Bodie- Benton railroad, or what is left of it. From what I hear the old Trestle is still standing and it would be a great shot for the article. We now have the Bodie and Benton article approved, it will be published after the first of the year.
Plan C, is our annual three or four days in Ely. This trip will happen I as soon as we get the chance and time. It now may fall somewhere in late July or August. Brenda and I are looking forward to visiting our friends there. I am willing to bet that Al and Donna Frederick are wanting to get out and play some, we still have a lot places around Ely to visit yet.
Plan D, pending approval from Nevada Magazine. In September Tom and I are going to cover the Pine Nut Festival. This we are really looking forward to. The Festival and rodeo lasts about three days.
I am still working on the Project Faultless Article besides four others.I am still trying to find someone who lived in the Hot Creek range area when project Faultless happened. I need a couple of interviews for an article I have on the back burner.
I still have to find the Bennett Pass Charcoal Kiln ruins. As soon as the Journal gets published I will add a Nevada Charcoal kiln map to my site. I am working on it now. This way I can add all of the kilns I find to one map. When we get in Ely I will have to go and get the Hamilton Kilns up behind Big Smoky Mill.
I have really enjoyed writing with Dr. Tom Straka and I have learned a great deal in doing so. We plan on still doing articles together, as often as possible. I am planning for doing a few history articles about the ghost towns of Nevada and Death Valley on my own soon. But as everything go's, one step at a time, but first I need time to take that step. The gas prices are killing me, it now takes a lot more than just the free time to make a run. I think I need a helicopter!
