B efore 1868, the northeastern section of the state was
totally comprised in Lander County. Although the railroad did follow the
general course of the California trail, it passed north of many principal
settlements or camp at that time. The three most prominent camps were Austin
with about 3000 residents and in its prime, Treasure City at the summit of
Treasure Hill in White Pine District and a new camp called Hamilton some two
miles north and west of Treasure Hill. Hamilton first called Cave City was the
most recent boom in the district. Other new villages; Silver Springs two miles
southeast of Treasure City; and Egan Village in Egan Canyon district.
F ollowing
the new interest in the railroad and of the increased mining activity the
Legislature in 1869 created new divisions in Lander County. The result was the
development of two new counties, White Pine and Elko.
The White Pine County, which consisted of a group of valleys with Diamond Range
being the far most western point. In the fall of 1865 a party of prospectors
out of Austin in view of the mountain top covered in “White Pine Timber”, found
several mines of silver, lead and copper and formed the White Pine Mining
District on October 10th of that year. Two of the more prominent
prospectors were Robert Morrill and Thomas J Murphy. Discoveries were first
made in the region near the present town of Hamilton which was the first county
seat, but others soon followed in the surrounding areas. The following year
Murphy and a prospector named Crawford went to Philadelphia with ore from the
White Pine District and organized the Monte Cristo Mining Company. The company
then in 1867 sent out a superintendent who built a mill and preceded to work
the ores, with Murphy being the blacksmith for the company.

Book Reviews
F
or this months book I touched on the subject of the Forty-Niners. I have many that tell the saga in articles, and a few
books that tell the whole story. None so far tell much in detail about the Donner Party. I have just finished the " History
of the Donner Party by C. F. McGlashan. This issue is listed as the New Edition, printed 1931. It was published by
T. C. Wohlbruck, 251 Post St., S. F. Written with references from many still living survivors at the time, the author tells the story
in a way most writer would not dare today. To understand the dangers and turmoil the early settlers went through, you
would have to read this shocking tale. It is the best book I ever read to give me a great understanding, of what I thought
I already knew. I believe this book to be more truthful than some of the later stories told about the Donner Party.

T he weather is still holding out as always. Hot today and Hot
tomorrow. The fires have all died down and the hiway traffic still sucks. Oh, if I could only retire and find me a little cabin out in the middle of nowhere.
Everything is growing so fast it is hard to keep up. The houses have all gone up in price, mine has almost doubled, and ever one was happy. Then the
property taxes tripled as well and we have not gained a dam thing. Gas has jumped up to a few pennies short of three dollars. Other than that it is the
same old thing, just another day in in City.
If the gas keeps going up I will have to buy a mule
for outings.

Trip Logs
Well what can I say. I am just chasing my tail, day
by day. We have a lot of projects going on at work. When you can afford it, you don't have the time, and when you have the time, your broke.
I have finally finished my Hot Creek article for the journal, and the month has gone by already. As soon as I quit bring homework home from
work, I will have the time to get out.
At least I have set my vacation for September to, 11th through the 23rd. We plan on heading to Bodie on the 11th and get needed photos for our
Bodie and Benton article due the first of the year. Tom Straka is going to meet us in Bodie and we should have a couple of days to Ghosttown around the area.
Then it is off to the Pine Nut Festival over the weekend. This way I can get two planned trip in one shot. I hope to get some of the town sites I missed last time up there. It will be a whole week of fun, we may have to sleep in the back of the truck, depends on gas prices. Tom and I have been looking for this the entire
year, and it will be our first chance to meet each other. I really need the time off!
| Personal Notes |
Ather a year of dealing with specialist, Brenda finally fired the
doctor. Now, maybe we can get something done. She has been back and forth every week, and now has gone back to the doctor who did her
neck surgery. As of yesterday, it sounds like he may get the job done real soon. It now sounds like she will not be able to make the trip in September as planned.
If Wesley go's, it will be easier to camp rather than stay in motels. I hope before the next issue is due, she will be on her feet again. This is beginning
to sound like a broken record, but to all the family and friends that keep e-mailing me, she is up more and looking forward to getting this over with. Brenda still wants to make an Ely trip this year as soon as possible.
Upcoming Plans, UPDATED
Well, as soon as we get the vacation in September over
with it will be back to the plans, I hope!
Plan A, some how this fall, before it get too cold, Brenda want to
go and stay in Ely for two to three days. I have more vacation than I will use this year. I will have to carry a week over for 2006. There is so much
we have not got to in White Pine County. I still want to run up to Eureka and check out the Diamond Range.
Plan B, I just found out a couple of weeks ago, That we have been
all around the Bristol Wells Cemetery. The first Sunday I get free, it's back to Pioche. I want to find the charcoal kiln ruins up on Bennett Pass road above the
airport at Panaca as well. I have a couple of site on the old maps to explore while we are up there as well.
Plan C, a one day run over to Death Valley and explore some of the old
gold camps. I want to find the cemetery at Skidoo while we are in the area.
Plan D, looking forward to having a great Christmas to end the year right. Like
with a wife running around the house making life miserable for me, like in the old days.
