Columbus Hotel, Wadsworth.

Churchill county was created by the legislature of 1861, with the county seat at Buckland, and was attached to Lyon county for judicial purposes. Before it was organized it had already lost a portion of it's area to the county of Lander, only to become independent in 1864. Later in 1869 it again lost more area, but this time to Nye county. What remained was largely desert, marsh lands, and alkaline lakes, but there was some 25,000 acres of excellent hay land and 20,000 of arable land. At that time there was perhaps some 5000 acres under cultivation on the Carson slough. click-thru to the full article.

Latest trip log; October 31st, 2004

Well I have been working on my Pioche History. So the Priority of todays run is Pioche. But to make a full day of it Wesley and I decided to start by driving to St. George and heading north to Gunlock. I wanted to check out Gunlock, Veyo, Hamblins Historical Site and renew my pictures of Modena.

Well there is nothing left of the old Gunlock, it is all new. Small settlement with a church and rodeo arena. Veyo had nothing old either. Now Hamblins Historical site is going to be an all day explore by itself. The road was completely washed out, so we are going to have to find another way around the mountain. Now Modena is not going no where, I got some new photos so I can update by page for that one.

When we got to Panaca area, I wanted to find some more mills, but the page mill had nothing but a few bricks scattered around and the Condor is long since gone. So, I redid my photos of the Chicago Mill at Bullionville instead. And then started up the valley working our way through Dry Valley and up to the Moodyville and Lionville area. Both of these towns were replace by hay fields. Well we are not having a good day. So we head into Pioche to stop at the museum and visit with Louis Benezet. He gave me some more history, and I took a lot of photos of the museum for a new page. Wes and I got some really cool shots of town, we added the Wells Fargo building, the Hotel, and the mine at the top of main street. Well we didn't get everything we started out to, but we never do. That's half of the fun of it, going back!

All and all it was a very good day, got to see a lot of snow, plowed through a bunch of mud, and never had any major problems.

Local News in Vegas!

Brenda and I were invited to attend the Grand Open House of the Michelle Gresham's Mansion here in Vegas. The cook looked a little out of place but the food was awesome. The beverages were plentiful and the company was great. We had a splendid good time, and when she reads this she will kill me. Sorry Boss!

Personal Notes
In December

Wesley and I had a great time on our last day outing. I was wanting to get some new photos of Pioche and add the Lincoln County Museum to my site. The Utah part did not pan out like I wanted, but we can always go again.

It looks like December is going to be full, altho I do have two days off during my birthday. I hope to make that dreaded trip back to St Thomas on the 7th or 8th. Money is real tight due to the medical bills. But at least Brenda is up and doing much better now. So I am hoping that after the first of the year we can start off with a bang and go great guns.

I have an extra weeks vacation for next year and it is about time that we try for some of the northern counties. It takes so long to get up there and they are so spread out it will take some time. And I plan on at least one week back up in White Pine County. I always love going up there. It give us a chance to visit with friends and get in some good Ghosttowning, plus I always learn a lot about history from Donna.

So for December I am going to shoot for, one day at St Thomas, one day at Goff and maybe return to Barnwell (Manvel) and Vanderbilt.

I am going to make good use of the spare time and get back to writting history. I want to post more in the way of history than just my photo sites. It seems the History pages get more interest than photos.

2005 Plans

Brenda and I both want to try and make the 2005 Rally this year. I can't remember where they are having the first one at, but I'm sure Cat will e-mail me about it. I have had many people e-mail us about why we haven't made it, well now we can!

We are having a Forum Shops Ghosttown outing about April for an over night. The plans are now that it will be up in the Peavine Canyon area. I hope to get to Simon, Athens, Potomac, return to Cimarron, return to Cloverdale, San Antonio Mine, Ray, Golden and anything else in the area if we have time. The camp site will be at the Peavine campgrounds.

In March I am trying to make plans for an over night either in southern Nevada or over in Death Valley, let me know which you are interested in Craig!

Also sometime in 2005 I hope to get back up to the Sprucemont area again, I didn't get very many photos the last there.

What do you think?

Well now is the time to find out if anybody likes the NEW newsletter format? If you do I will do it this way from now on. If you don't I will go back to the text letter I have been sending.
