I n the years that Ward and Cherry
Creek were on their downside, Taylor was just starting to boom. Buildings were
being moved in from nearby camps and the post office opened on May 9, 1883. The
new business district of Taylor sponsored saloons, butcher shops, restaurants,
boarding houses, stores, drugstores, brewery, opera house and school. Now with
a population of 1500 people, Taylor was the center of activity for the county.
If one were to read the advertisements in the White Pine News, it would
make you want to hitch up old Betsy and run over to Taylor to shop.
T he first two sourdoughs to stumble
upon the potential of the site were, Taylor and Pratt. The Taylor district was
founded in 1873, the Argus mine run by Jim Ragsdale was named the Taylor Mine
soon afterward.
T he Ward Reflex was moved to
Taylor and promptly called the White Pine Reflex in June of 1884 by
Robert W. Simpson. On August 12, 1885 Simpson posted a final shot, in my terms
he basically said, he was going for the gusto or fall in his beer. Well he most certainly could not swim; he
sold the White Pine Reflex to W. L. Davis who was publishing the White
Pine News at Cherry Creek. Soon afterward due to the prosperity of Cherry
Creek, Davis moved the newspaper back to Taylor and started publishing the White
Pine News in Taylor.

Book Reviews
O
cotober I started out by reading, "Nevada" by Zane Grey. It is not real history, but I always enjoy a good Zane Grey. This hardback was published in 1928,
even though my favorite is still the "Riders of the Purple Sage", it is just hard to beat. After Nevada, I started on the history of " Wells & Fargo", this is better than I thought but, I just got my copy of the "Walker River Paiutes" A Tribal History. So I am going to read it before I finish "Wells & Fargo", there might be some good history
I can use on our article about the Pinenut Festival that we are finishing up on. I am finding that the Tribal History is very interesting, it's like the other side of the story.
I am only half way through, but still, if you are interested in Indian History this book by Edward C. Johnston wrote in 1975 would be a good buy, Ebay $3.50.
Local News in Vegas!
T he weather is finally at 70's in the day time, with the lows around 50 at
night. The rodeo is in town, and there are cowboys everywhere. The news in Vegas, is the same old thing, day in and day out. We overhauled the show this month, so everything should run great, at least for a couple of weeks. I have had so much overtime I have not been able to keep up with the news, or get out to ghost town any.
T he gas prices are finally coming down, but I have no time to get out.

Trip Logs
W ell, this month there are no trip logs. I just have not had the time
to get out. Sunday October 30th, I was planning on going to Bristol Wells and find the cemetery and go up to Bennett Pass and also find the charcoal kilns. Instead
I decided to watch the Chiefs and Chargers game. Being a long, LONG time Chiefs fan, I should have known better and went to Bristol Wells in stead, I would have had a much better day.
T he summer has come to an end. I will have to deal with the weather
if we get out anymore this year.
| Personal Notes |
W e are now just waiting on a surgery date. All I can do is wait. I
hope after this is all over and done with we can get back to a normal life around here.
Upcoming Plans, UPDATED
I am going to take it one weekend at a time for the rest of the year.
Maybe a couple of one day trips, If I am lucky.
Plan A, a one day trip back over to Ash Meadows.
They have got Jack Longstreets cabin rebuilt. I will need to get a few pictures to update my Longstreet Page for Longstreet Springs.
Plan B, the frst Sunday I get free, it's back to Pioche. I want to find the charcoal kiln ruins up on Bennett Pass road above the
airport at Panaca and get the cemetery at Bristol Wells.
Plan C, some how before Christmas, Brenda want to
go and stay in Ely for two to three days. I still need photos of the murals in Ely for my article I have on the back burner.. There is so much
we have not got to in White Pine County. I still want to run up to Eureka and check out the Diamond Range.
Plan D, looking forward to having a great Christmas to end the year right. Like
with a wife running around the house making life miserable for me, like in the old days.
