Back before the 49'ers ever thought of California, before the Sutter's Mill discovery there was only a few who dare travel across the western desert. The Mormons were the early pioneers who were looking for more than just gold. Sure Jedediah Smith and John C. Fremont explored the west, but they had no intentions to settle there. It is one thing to travel across a vast desert, but to try and live there is another. All of the first settlements in Nevada were Mormon. Mormon Station, Las Vegas, Panaca, Bunkerville, St. Thomas, these are but a few.
James William Huntsman, born October 8th 1806, was making lumber in White Pigeon Michigan when he first met Hanna Davis who was 15 at the time. On January 28th 1831 they were married. It was long about this time that he became a Mormon. Between Michigan and Shoal Creek Utah, they would bare 11 children, and suffer more pain than most in just trying to live a peaceful life. James and his family moved to Nauvoo in about 1839. They had two children born there before the exodus to the west, in search of the promise land that Brigham Young had hoped to find.

Book Reviews
This months book is "The Bonanza West", The Story of the Western Mining Rushes, 1848-1900, by William S. Greever_1963. With my limited time to read, it took me all month to finish it. William has done great research which enables him to give fabulous details. He starts in California and follows through Nevada, Colorado, Montana, North and South Dakota, and then to Alaska. It makes for some great reading. Not so much as a novel, but being a history buff I enjoyed the book greatly.
If you like reading about the Old West during the Gold Rush days, then you will enjoy this book. I found a lot of new history that I have never come across before.
Local News in Vegas!
T he weather has been cool but not cold. I wish I had more time free to get out,
the weather is great for it.
After the NRA left town in December, things clamed down some. Now in January we have the Chinese New Year. Caesars always makes a big deal out of it and our crowds increase quit abit. They have now come and gone and the winter vacation tourist keeps us busy for now. New Years eve was one of the best firework shows the town has ever had. I watched it from the comfort of my front room, on TV. There is no way I am going down on the strip to fight 300,000 drunks, when I can set at home and fall out of my chair on soft carpet. That is to say if I was a drinking man!
Hell, everyone knows that New Years Eve is amateur night, not a good time for the serious at heart!
J ust when I thought I was going to get a break, the gas price's have gone back up again!

About a week ago I got e-mail from a one Robin Adair in California. He told me of his family ties and the old home place founded in
Nevada and gave me some interesting history. I did my home work and found there to be on the old homestead, three graves, petroglyphs,
and a old stone house. This I must see, and today is the day to see it.
Wesley and I headed out early for Moapa. There was some mix up in the obituary about Emeline Huntsman which gave the directions as west,
when it should have said south. Anyway, we had a great time four wheeling all over the place. We did find the Kane Springs Ranch and I got pictures
of the graves, petroglyphs, and the old cabin. I now have the history and photos for a profile I can put in my February Newsletter as featured.
II really love it when all the plans come together. There is a lot of history in this area. We had a great day even though we did not make it up to
bennett Pass, we ran out of time. I had to climb all over the place, the petroglyphs were everywhere.

Upcoming Plans, starting the new year !
Well I got in a new idea for January, and now its back to plans. I do have a few special interests if time and research come together.
Plan A, after trying to find the elusive Bennett Pass charcoal kilns, it ranks number one for the year. I know there is probably nothing but a pile of rocks to find, but I have to see those rocks. Sometimes after all the research to find
the location of things, you just got to follow through. If I am lucky, we can get the Comet Mining Camp on the same trip, backup to plan A.
Plan B, if the weather holds up like it has been will be Death Valley. I want to get more of the old mining camps, and there is a bunch. Besides, I still need to get up to Lookout, I will probably have to walk. I am trying to get the us of a ATV, I only need to climb about a half mile.
Plan C, is the first scheduled trip of the year, so far. Around the third weekend in May we have been invited to attend and document a real ghost dance at the Walker River Piaute Reservation. As far I as know there has not been one documented in the last one hundred years.
Plan D, hopefully while we are in the area I should be able to visit Rawhide. There are many good sites in the Walker River area.
