John Charles Fremont !

History article !

John Charles Fremont was born on the 21st of January 1813. His family lived in Charleston, South Carolina. His father, who bore the same name, had a great interest in the character and condition of the North American Indians, for he spent the last years of his life visiting many tribes. John's mother in all of her beauty and worth was Ann Beverly Whiting, a native of Gloucester County, Virginia. Her family was connected with many distinguished names, one of which was Washington, to whom she was nearly related.

John's father died in 1818, leaving a widow and three children, two sons and a daughter. His mother finally pasted away in 1847, at Aiken, South Carolina.

When John was about thirteen a lawyer in Charleston by the name of John W. Mitchell Esq. Took him in to his office with hopes of making a lawyer out of him. Fremont spent many years under the learned instructor Dr. Roberton receiving a very high-class education. He became very noted for his ability to learn in a fast manner and excelled in mathematics. Following that he attended junior class in Charleston College triumphantly. After college he was to embark upon his heroic adventures and scientific explorations.

Fremont's first experience came from the prosecution of a lawsuit, in which a certain rice-field in the neighborhood of Charleston was involved. The need was to have it carefully and accurately surveyed. The problem was the grave sickness going around in that particular area and no one would take the job. John's mathematical attainments were brought to knowledge of those parties in concern. Upon their requests Young Fremont promptly agreed to perform the service. The courage for which he engaged in the enterprise, and the scientific skills and clerical neatness in which he executed it, drawn admiration of many persons of influence. Because of his outstanding ability performed during this adventure, he soon was secured employment.

W hile I was in Ely Nevada last fall, I got a few photos of the great Murals painted all around town. I thought this would make a good screen saver!

Book Reviews

This months book is "Life Explorations and Service of John C. Fremont", the detailed tale of Fremont Exploration with a lot of his on reports and dairy used in it. Wrote by Charles Wentworth Upham. My copy was published in 1856 by Ticknor and Fields. I found this to be very interesting and true. It tells of all four explorations Fremont made and gives great details by listing a lot from his actual reports. It has also given me more history to do a feature story this month on Fremont, being brief, it was a large book.

If you have ever wanted to know all about Fremont and his trips, this book will cover them all.

Local News in Vegas!

T he weather for the biggest part this winter has been really great. I have made trips up to the Pioche area and there is no snow on the ranges at all. If it keeps this up, we will be able to make several more trips this winter.

Other than keeping Metro busy, there really has not been anything more than normal going on. The was a benefit over at the Coliseum for the New Orleans fund, can you vision Celine and Elton on the same stage, think of the ego's. It went over very well, and raised a bunch of money.

They are now starting to build homes in the valley north of Apex. It is about 70 miles from Vegas just along the Arrow Canyon Range. Where will they build next!

I give up on any hope of gas relief, I will just have to make more money and pay the price!

Last Trip Log

Trip Logs

Feb 12th,2006

Ever since last fall I have been chasing down the location of the charcoal kiln on Bennett Pass, west of Panaca. Well today was our second try at finding it. Wesley and I left around 7:00 am and made it our priority for today.

The only way I could think of finding it was, drive up to the top of the range and run all of the roads. I told Wesley the directions that I remember were to go up to the second turn and go north. God there are a lot of road up there. After two hours of running all over the northern side Wesley asked if I would consider going south instead. I seem to always go the wrong way first. Well we found it, but, it does not look like a regular type kiln, more like a rock pit. We also found the site of Fossil embedded rocks, BLM sign. Founded some really kool fossils.

Well after almost three hours of running the roads and a hour digging through rocks, I was ready to call it a day. I was planning on going up to the Comet mine site after the charcoal kiln, but it was to late to start a new adventure. We had great weather, around 70 degrees, and a lot of fun exploring. I can now check this one off the list as found, and go on to something else, maybe Death Valley next weekend.

Personal Notes

Upcoming Plans, starting the new year !

Well a whole lot of my ideas have been changed again as usual. We found the charcoal kiln up on Bennett Pass and found out about a few more we have not been to.

Plan A, now we have a charcoal kiln at Brick Kiln Springs, just a little south and east of the Hot Creek Valley. It is in Railroad Valley and should be able to cover this in a one day run.

Plan B, will be a trip to Goldfield. I have never taken the time to get any photos in this area. There is a Kiln located somewhere around Dago Joe Springs east of Goldfield. Besides I need to get the Mill sites in Goldfield anyway. Again this should be a one day trip this winter.

Plan C, after finding the elusive Bennett Pass charcoal kilns, I want to explore the area around the Comet Mine. There seems to be many historical sites locate there. A Mill, and maybe a cabin or two. The Comet Mine had a big influence on the Pioche area. They named a siding after it.

Plan D, if the weather holds up like it has been will be Death Valley. I want to get more of the old mining camps, and there is a bunch. Besides, I still need to get up to Lookout, I will probably have to walk. I am trying to get the us of a ATV, I only need to climb about a half mile.

Plan E, is the first scheduled trip of the year, so far. Around the third weekend in May we have been invited to attend and document a real ghost dance at the Walker River Piaute Reservation. As far I as know there has not been one documented in the last one hundred years.

Plan F, hopefully while we are in the area I should be able to visit Rawhide. There are many good sites in the Walker River area.
