After over a decade of pounding St. George and Cedar City with fallout, totally killing entire herds of sheep, causing cancer and Leukemia cases through out western Utah and Nevada, the two biggest leaders in the world finally came to an agreement. 1963 the Limited Test Ban Treaty was signed. Leading the way, President John F. Kennedy and Russia’s President Kruschev, agreed to move all nuclear tests underground.

The first atomic bombs were tested in the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1948. Having test grounds so far away proved to be a hardship on our New Mexico weapon designers. In 1951 a new and closer testing ground was located 90 miles north of Las Vegas, the Nevada Test Site (NTS). They made over one hundred above ground atmospheric tests, before the new Test Ban Treaty was signed. The remaining 828 nuclear tests were conducted underground and in tunnels. This was to cause a great concern. The larger the test, the more complaints from Las Vegas residents and casino operators. To keep the damage down from shattering windows and such, they would be limited to the size test they could detonate.

In the summer of 1966, the Pentagon began to call for underground tests of much larger yield than the Nevada Test Site could handle. Their other site at Pahute Mesa was also thought to be inadequate for larger shots. Scientist then began a search for areas that would meet the requirements for such tests. They would need solid rock underneath, little to no water, a remoteness from habitation or other “works of man”, which would be rattled from ground shock. This all led them to find, Amchitka, Alaska, and Central Nevada.

Local News in Vegas!

Well, weather would mean a change there of, that we do not have. It is always hot today and hotter tomorrow. They always predict that there is a chance of rain, what they don't say is it never hit's the ground. We are now in the one hundreds and will probably stay there for the rest of the summer.

The convention has come and gone, Thank God, I am always glad to see it go. This tided up all of my time for the first two weeks of the month. Then I had an old friend come to visit for a week, we grew up from day one and went all the way through school together. This was the best week I have had in a long time. Don't you just love to get out that old year book and talk about all the stupid stuff you did decades ago. His wife just decided after 33 years to live elsewhere, he was really in the mood for Vegas. Then my ex daughter-in-law came in for a week, you should get the picture, we did not get out at all this month.

What is it with these gas prices! If we would take away the expense account for Congress and they had to pay for their gas I bet they could solve the problem then. I was thinking about selling blood for extra gas bucks!

Book Reviews

This months book is " A Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush", a collection of letters by Franklin A. Buck, compiled by Katherine White. and published by Houghton Mifflin Company, New York, 1930. These letters were from Franklin to his sister in Bucksport, Maine, they span from 1846 to 1880. I am going to cheat a little, I still have two chapters to go. Have you ever read a book of complied letters? I was hoping there would be a great amount of history in it. I do know how many times Sacramento burned down, but he had a hard time getting off the subject of himself. If you have nothing else to read and you are trying hard to get to sleep, this is your book. I don't know, I just could not get into it very hard. The biggest part of the letters were while he was living in Weaverville California, where nothing much happen.

It all come down to the fact that he was too lazy to mine and he was not very good at running a store, because he was always broke!

Trip Logs

May_ There were no trips this month!

Well May is never a good time for me. The Forum Shops sponsor a once a year convention for all the mall owner in the world. Our owners are here as well and everything go's sort of crazy. Not only is it next to impossible to get time off but the hours sometimes get long as well. We paint, repair, improve and hide everything that is not up to par.

I had so many plans for this month but nothing seemed to follow as I wanted. I had plans to make the Ghost Dance but the dates fell on the worst time possible. Theres just not enough time in each day, and the older I get the days get shorter it seems. I still have a lot of vacation left so I may make up for it later.

I have found a new friend who has been there and done that, as far as charcoal kilns are concerned. With his photos from the mid seventies I now found a few more kilns I did not know about. I am glad that I am not the only nut who has looked for them. Well I need to get out of the house and tomorrow Wesley and I are going back up to the Pioche area. I hope to get back to Jack Rabbit for some new shots, I have not been there for a few years. Next month I should have a lot more to write about.

Personal Notes

Upcoming Plans !

Well we got a couple of new leads and we are back to charcoal kiln hunting again. I hope to get out more in June, hell Brenda wants to take a week.

Plan A, this will be back up to Bristol Wells in search of one more kiln. I hope to get out the first weekend in June for this one. Maybe I can stop at Jack Rabbit for some new photos while we are at it, it's been a few years since I have been there.

Plan B, after finding the elusive Bennett Pass charcoal kilns, I still have more to explore in the area. I want to check the points around the Comet Camp and the area close to there. This could very well be our next trip this coming weekend.

Plan C, is back to Ely to visit and get the Diamond Range up by Eureka. Diamond Nevada is one of the priority trips for this summer. There is another charcoal Kiln there I have not got to yet.

Plan D, would be a one day trip back to Death Valley for a few more Ghost Towns and a walk up to the top of Lookout to see the camp. God I hope it does not get hot before we get there.

Ihave priorty one this year to get up on the Diamond Range and cover that area!
