Pioche Nevada !

History article !

click-thru to the full article.

T he history of Lincoln County is well known through the history of its mines. It all began with all the who-ha down in Eldorado Canyon, Potosi mine was the first lode mine in Nevada. Discoveries in Pahranagat Valley followed then the discoveries near Pioche, located on a spur of the Ely Mountains facing north. Pioche was first settled by Jos. Grange and E. M. Chubard, who in 1868 erected a small furnace. This turned out to be a failure and they abandoned the location. The following year, Meadow Valley district was reorganized and given the name of Ely District in honor of John H. Ely. Ely and W. H. Raymond, who placed a five-stamp quartz mill rented from a New York Company, in Meadow Valley, at the site of Bullionville, because of the abundance of water at that location. Later that same year the Company of P. McCannon, L. Lacour and A. M. Bush plotted out the townsite. The surveyor for the job was E. L. Mason, and the town was properly named by one Mrs. Carmichael Williamson. Her letter reads,

M eadow Valley, 1869
Messrs, Smith, Townsend, McNeill and other- locating the 'City of the future';
Gentlemen- With many thanks for the compliment allowing me to suggest a name for your City, I offer for your consideration 'Pioche.' Most Respectfully,
S. E. C. Williamson.

T he first county seat was established was at Crystal Springs, but was short lived, it was moved to Hiko in 1867. Mining booms draw respect and the desire to be the center of county government. Pioche wrested the title from Hiko on February 24th, 1871.

Iincoln county has significant historic interest. Between 1540 and 1775, the Spaniards explored through the southwest region. Then in 1863 a local Indian revealed a good specimen of silver ore to, "Famous Scout, Prospector, Expert Rifleman, and Missionary to the Indians," William Hamblin. Now Hamblin was one of those, 'Mormons', who founded Gunlock, Utah, in 1857 and came to Clover Valley in the early 60's, and was said to be the first white man to settle in Meadow Valley. Later in 1872, Hamblin would be an essential witness in the court battles between Raymond & Ely and the Hermes Mining Company over control of the mineral wealth in the camp. However, before he could testify, he was administered a lethal drink. Realizing he had been poisoned he started for home in Gunlock, Utah. After reaching Barclay in Clover Valley he could travel no farther, and he died there. Hamblin was buried in the Barclay cemetery.

Local News in Vegas!

This month it has tried to rain many days, it just never happen. We have had more clouds than I have seen for the last three years, just no rain. Even with the clouds it has still been in the triple digits. Hopefully August will be cooler.

The biggest thing in the news has been "Metro", and it has not been good. With the cop's shooting a guy right on the strip and then pulling him out of the car to put on the hand cuff's, well the tourist thought it was just another episode of CSI in the making. There has been so many shoot first and ask questions later that the FBI is now doing an investigation into the problem. I hope it all works out OK, I do not want my taxes to go up to pay for all of the law suits.

With the cost of fuel as it is, I will probably be doing only one trip a month, if that. I am now considering changing the newsletter to by monthly. I am having problems keeping up with everything else I have going on. I am not sure if there are very many people reading it anyway. I have been spending more time at UNLV trying to research for my history articles. I am now committed to Eva at Tonopah to help write for the Central Nevada's Glorious Past Journal. So Professor Tom and I will be regular authors in it. If you actually read the newsletter and like it let me know. Just drop me an e-mail saying so. Actual donations for the past five years is now at twenty three dollars.

Book Reviews

This months book is " Jack Longstreet, Last of the Desert Frontiersmen", if you like Western Novels and good history this is must. I have had this book for quit some time on the shelve and just never got around to reading it. Jack Longstreet has been referred to as the John Wayne of Nevada and I believe it to be true after reading this book. Written by Sally Zanjani and published by Nevada publications this is the best book I have read yet. At least I enjoyed it greatly.

Jack had many years roaming southern Nevada along with a lot, quit a lot, of shooting scraps, for which no one ever killed him. He finally died at a old age and by his own cause. Some called him an outlaw, while others gave him great respect, they had to, or it would be another killing in self defense.

Last Trip Log

Trip Logs

July 30th, 2006

Money is tight, the grand kids are driving me nut's, I have so many things I need to get done I don't know which one to do first, and there is only one thing I can think of _ Road Trip!

Brother Jon at work heard me tell about our trip to Jack Rabbit and he wanted to take his son. Since Wesley and I did not get to photo the inside of the Jack Rabbit Tunnel and I wanted to go Fossil hunting, we agreed to go back again. There are also some petroglyphs along the way I have been trying to get to for three years. So it was out to the Jack Rabbit mine in Lincoln county.

Our first stop would be at Pahranagat lakes, there are petroglyphs on the west side of the road south of the big lake. Well I found the spot, but there were thousands of rocks right where I thought they should be. We looked all over the place and could have just as easily walked by as not. After about an hour I gave for the time being. And we decided to head on to Black Rock Point at Delamar Lake for more. Wesley headed out along the east side of the ridge and Jon and his son Jaedon started up to the top. While I was getting my camera out I saw a little sign just about fifty feet from me. I walked over to it and it said, Petroglyphs! It was just one large rock and they are very old and hard to see, but I got a photo anyway. The one rock was all I could find, but that was enough. It was now on to Jack Rabbit.

At Royal City (Jack Rabbit) we spent about three or four hours exploring the area and had a great time of it. Then we drove up to the tunnel and had a late lunch, it was very cool sitting in front of the mine shaft. The tunnel was very cold and very large at the end, or as far I as care to go. I got some good photos and we got out to warm up. It was starting to get late in the afternoon so we headed back to Bennett Pass for the fossil field. As we arrived down at Panaca the clouds were rolling in and it was raining hard up on the pass, so we called it a day, Jaedon was worn out anyway.

Well it was a good trip and I needed it. Everyone had fun and that is what the whole thing is about anyway. I have some good photos and a couple of bottles to show for it.

Personal Notes

Upcoming Plans !

I am now trying to find the time and money for another trip back to Eureka. This time I am taking Wesley to turn loose and find the remaining two kilns I missed last time at Diamond City.

Plan A, trip to Eureka and photos needed for our next article of Hot Creek. Also to find Buck Station which I skipped last time because I thought there was nothing left of it. Al Frederick has photos and I was wrong.

Plan B, the first free Sunday I get, it will be back to Indians Springs above Pioche to find that kiln. I have photos out of the 70's showing the kiln by Jim O'Neill, so I know it is somewhere around there, I just don't know where for sure. This could take all day to explore and find. But I will, you can bet on that.

Plan C, given the time I would like to spend the day at Pahranagat, I now have the Petroglyphs bug as well. There is a lot of rock there and one has petroglyphs on them. This would be another Sunday of fun.

Plan D, would be a one or two nighter back to Kiln Canyon for more exploring. Then I could do more around the Hot Creek Ranch as well.
