L isted in the Yellow Pine District at the extreme southeast corner of Lincoln County in 1881. Located in the Spring Mountain range some thirty miles southeast of Las Vegas.
I t seems every book has a different story about Nevada's oldest lode mine. One says the Indians
Were mining bullets before the white man came but in the 1840's did the Indians have guns and powder,
I think not. While another story claims a Mormon battalion making its way back from California in 1847
Found ore here and named it after an Indian guide. Then there is the possibility that the Mexicans may have been up here years before mining the ore and that's how the Indians found out about it. What ever the facts
Leading up this may have been, the Mormon's out from the Las Vegas mission did locate lead ore here
In 1856, with the help of a Paiute guide.
Ire thus far has only been located at one site. It crops out on the West Side of an almost perpendicular cliff 150 feet height near the summit. The ore is of Argentiferous Galena nature, lying horizontally, and varying in width from one to five feet with an outcropping of thirty feet at the base of the cliff.
I n 1852 the Mormons obtained the contract to carry the mail over a route which Congress had that year established from Salt Lake Utah to San Bernardino. A station was built at Las Vegas, and Brigham Young located a settlement at that point, partly for protection of the route.
In June of 1855 the Las Vegas mission was established by William Bringhurst and twenty-seven other brethren at Las Vegas Creek down on the Spanish Trail as part of the Mormon Church's Southern Indian Mission and mail station.

Local News in Vegas!
This months weather is about the same as last months. They keep saying it is going to rain, but I have not seen any yet. After staying in the triple digits all month, it could be a very warm fall as well. This means I can probably get a few more trips in this year.
This months big news was the Star Trek convention. God I remember watching them when I was younger, I like them but I never thought it would catch on like this. They had free autographs from the actors still living, but it cost you 300 plus dollars just to get in. That is not very free in my book. We got to see some very strange looking people walking Vegas this month, Klinon's or something.
I have gave up on thinking that gas may come down some. I will have to just get use to the idea of paying through the nose for gas. Every month when I do this Newsletter I keep asking myself why. Then I get a few e-mails from the people who are really into history and Ghosttowning and I feel a little better. The numbers are falling off this year after five years of climbing, so maybe everyone has had enough. The guest book is starting to be a joke. I get 300 spam hit a day with only about five a month being really interested. For anyone wanting to sign the guest book I would say just e-mail me and I will post it for you. What are guest books really good for, does anyone ever read them? Don't mind me, it is getting close to the end of the year and Brenda wants to shop for Christmas, I always feel down about this time, and I miss my old partner as well!

Book Reviews
This months book is " Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", By Dee Brown and published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, Inc. Brenda and I both have Native American back grounds. Not enough to really say we are Indian, but enough to make this book really hurt. I would say if you are feeling down and want to read a good book to get your mind off the troubles of every day life, not this one. This book is very sad, and makes you wonder how or even why any people would do this kinda thing to any culture. When New Mexico became a state, they gave citizenship to every one who lived within the boundaries of the state, even Mexican but not the Indians.
It would do every American good, that feels proud to be here, to read this book. The Indians were not bad in the beginning, they were great friends to the white men. They only learned the bad things from the whites, and when they did the same back they were savages! Read it first, then tell me if I am wrong.

Trip Logs
August 20th, 21st,22nd, and 23rd, 2006
After my last trip to Eureka, I only found one of the three kilns I was after. From the titles on the photos Jim O Neil took
in the early 70's, I know that one is in or close to Water Canyon and the other is south of the Phillipsburg Mine. Either way, I am going to have to walk
all over the place to find them. I gave Brenda the option to be my bird dog and go find or stay home this time. I won't use the words she used to answer, but it
was plain and simple, Wesley was going this trip.
Sunday morning we started out for the Hot Creek range. I need photos of the Hot Creek Canyon and tulles for the article we are working on. I also got some real good leads on where to find more history about the ranch. Oh yeah, before we got there we overheated the truck, not bad but just enough to have to stop and let her
cool off. They say 50 Hiway is the loneliest Hiway in Nevada, if you have ever broke down on 6 I think you would argue that. It seems when I checked the water that morning I did not get the cap on good. Of all of the stuff I had, water was not one of them. So, we set the cooler out to melt the ice and put it in the truck. Well that got us to the Hot Creek Ranch OK. Well this was enough to kill about five hours. We finally stop back at Pogue Station again to get the right photo of the shack, or
what was the shack. Last time I took photos of the fallen down line shack across the road. We finally made it to Eureka about four in the afternoon and headed straight for the motel, I was beat.
Monday morning Wesley and I headed out to the Diamond Range. I must have walked fifty miles that day, and most of it seemed up hill. Wesley covered 90 percent more than I did, but we could not find the kilns. We did find more stone cabin ruins and a charcoal pit. We got out there at nine in the morning and gave up around four. After we got back to the motel I died again. There has to be a easier way of doing this. The next morning after we ate I hit the locals up for information trying to find out more about the range and kilns. I did, now there is two more kiln up Green Canyon I did not know about. This will make five kilns after I find them all. At least I do have one already. About noon we headed out for Ely. The plan was to stop at Buck Station on the way. Now this has to be the best kept Pony Express Station in Nevada. We found three stone cabins and a stone stable, with a wooden post pen. Got to Ely in the afternoon and visited with Al and Donna for the rest of the day. On Wednesday morning we headed home, but first we would stop again at Indian Springs above Pioche to search for the kiln we could not find last time, and did not find this time either.
Wesley and I learned more on this trip than we saw. I got several good leads for more history and a better understanding of where to look next time. All and all we had a good time and got a very good suntan. And for all of you fishing nuts, Illipah is full again and we are going fishing next time out.

Upcoming Plans !
M y next trip will be September 9th thru 11th, this is my yearly fishing trip to
Illipah. We may do some mid day trips up to Hamilton and so to up date photos, but mainly I am going fishing. The lake is full this year and should be great.
Plan A, could be return trips to Eureka, I now have some great contacts there and have found more kilns to chase after. We have only found one of the possible five kilns on the Diamond Range. There is still a lot of Diamond City history to be wrote yet.
Plan B, Tom has come up with a great idea for a new article. This could be a late in the year trip to, lets just say a few Ghost Town Saloons. We could possibly do this in the winter time. It all is base around when he can get his butt out here this year.
Plan C, will be a one day trip to Sloan Canyon to find and get photos of the petroglyphs there. I want to start a series on Petroglyphs like I have on the Charcoal Kilns in Nevada
Plan D, lose weight and have a good Christmas! I am getting way to heavy to be climbing all around this country we visit. Maybe I will have to buy an ATV, it would be easier than losing weight.
