On April 28th, 1844 J. C. Fremont camped here at Salt Springs stating that it was not one of his better camps. The water was
way to salty to drink, but the men were able to find a good source of water in a spring just to the north. This most likely was
Amargosa Spring.

| In 1848 a wagon train of emmigrants leaving Salt Lake heading to California by way of the spanish trail were lead by a Captain Hunt who had
been this way three time before. While stopping over at Salt Springs a few members found some gold float up in the hills, again probably around Amargosa
Spring. They took thier ore sample on to California were they had it assayed in Los Angeles to find it to be high grade. Plans were made to return to Salt Springs
in Jan 1850 to mine this rich ore. The original discoverer was credited as a Mr. Roan.

In 1851 a Los Angeles mining company was in control as well as the Desert mining company, but due high cost because of the remoteness of the mines
they soon went under. After that Salt Spring Mining Co. took over the claims.
|
| Still in the 1880's another company took over but it wasn't until 1902 that
the mother lode was found here. J. B. Osborne pulled some $60,000 worth of high grade ore out in one weeks time. |
