In 1863 they discovered lead-silver in Sylvania Canyon which three years later led to the camp of Sylvania being formed. The original camp was stone and log cabins to later be followed by newer buildings. It was said that the general store was run by Chris Zabriskie who grew to fame as the Death Valley borax miner. The mines produced well enough that in 1875 a thirty ton smelter was built. It ran for several years before shutting down. After 1880 only small operatoins were left. Over the years many have come and gone leaving building and a lot of equipment. |
